Plans for a Memorial Garden
It has been our ambition for some time to create a dedicate area in the church ground for burial of cremated remains (ashes). This is because seven caskets or crematorium 'boxes' containing cremated remains of seven people who died between 1956 and 2023 have been casually stored in the parish church.
The Diocesan Advisory Committee agrees that we should have a memorial garden on the liturgical south side of the church. This will be a separated, fenced area where the caskets will be interred; the boxes of ashes will be opened and the contents strewed in accordance with Canon Law. A paper and digital record will be maintained of the location of each interment but no physical markers will be placed in the ground. The plot will be large enough to accommodate future interments of cremated remains.
Although the ground is consecrated there has never been interments or burials in the church ground so the Bishop of Liverpool will visit to rededicate the ground on Tuesday 14 May at 10:30 when the mortal remains will finally be laid to rest.
At the moment we are in a period of seeking permission from the Diocesan Chancellor to put up some railings to mark the area as a burial ground. This requires permission so a notice is displayed inside and outside the church for 28 days. You can read the notice here.
Please contact Fr Andrew or a Church Warden for more informaiton.
